Mysore city is the cultural capital of Karnataka. The city is situated at the base of Chamundi Hills and is famous for the Dussehra celebrations during which a large number of tourists visit the city. Hindu mythology says that Mysore was ruled by Mahishasura a demon who was later on killed by Goddess Chamundeshwari.
Dussehrafestival (during Sep / Oct)is celebrated for a period of 10 days. The ninth day of the celebration is known as Mahanavami and the imperial sword is worshiped on this day. Processions constituting ornamented elephants, camels and horses are taken out.
Mysore is also known as City of Palaces. There are a large number of palaces in &around the city to be visited. The most famous attraction of Mysore is the Mysore Palace. On holidays, during the evening, whole palace is lit up with sparkling lights. |

Major Attractions in Mysore:
Mysore Palace:
 The Palace of Mysore (also known as the Amba Vilas Palace) is the official residence of the Wodeyars - the erstwhile royal family of Mysore, which ruled the princely state of Mysore for over seven centuries. The palace also houses two durbar halls (ceremonial meeting hall of the royal court).Mysore palace is now one of the most famous tourist attractions in India after Taj Mahal with more than 2.7 million visitors.
Mysore Zoo:
Officially known as Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardensis a 245-acre zoo located near the palace. It is home to a wide range of species. It was established under royal patronage in 1892, making it one of the oldest zoos in the world.
Brindavan Gardens:
Garden lies adjoining the KrishnarajaSagara dam which is built across the river Kaveri. Visited by close to 2 million tourists per year, the garden is one of the major attractions near the city of Mysore.
Karanji Lake:
The lake is surrounded by a nature park consisting of a butterfly park and a walk-through aviary. This aviary is the biggest 'walk-through aviary in India. There is also a museum, the Regional Museum of Natural History, which is located on the banks of this lake.
Railway Museum:
It is an outdoor exhibit of vintage locomotives. The Railway Museum was established in 1979 by Indian Railways, the second such museum after the National Railway Museum in Delhi. It has locomotives and a gallery of photographs and paintings depicting the growth of railways in India. Railway signals and lights are also displayed. The museum has a battery-operated mini-train giving a short ride for children on the grounds.
Chamundi Hill:
It is about 13 kms from Mysore city. Atop the hill is the famous Sri Chamundeswari Temple. ‘Chamundi’ or ‘Durga’ is the fierce form of ‘Shakti’. She is the slayer of demons, ‘Chanda’ and ‘Munda’ and also ‘Mahishasura’, the buffalo-headed monster. View of the city from here is worth watching.
Devaraja Vegetable Market:
For a visitor to this city, Devarajamarket is an apt place to get a flavor of the local people’s ( Mysoreans, as they are called ) daily life. With more than 100 years of history, this market is well knitted into the heritage of Mysore. If you are new to the bazaars of India in general, do not miss Devaraja Market. This is a good sample of a traditional Indian market place that are colorful, noisy, vibrant and a tad chaotic.
Shopping:
Mysore Silks, Mysore Jasmine (Mysore Mallige), Mysore Sandalwood (Mysore Srigandha) and Mysore Eggplant (Mysore Badane) are the things that the city is famous for. For centuries now the city of Mysore has been famous for these things and this tradition continues to this day. The craftsmen of Mysore are equally famous. The city has some of the most beautiful and intricately carved temples in Karnataka. This tradition exists to this day, though the craftsmen use sandalwood and rosewood to carve on and make exquisite artefacts.
Srirangapatna:
It is located near the city of Mysore and is of great religious, cultural and historic importance.The town takes its name from the celebrated Ranganathaswamy temple which dominates the town, making Srirangapattana one of the most important Vaishnavite centers of pilgrimage in south India.
